  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    This San Jose-based software publisher has announced the availability of Acrobat 5.0. Adobe's new version offers tighter Web integration, support for industry-standard protocols like Open DataBase Connectivity (OBDC) that connect Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) forms with back-end databases and easier data exchange in Adobe PDF files through support for the eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

    The enhanced Web-based functionality in Acrobat 5.0 allows users to simultaneously review and share comments on-line. Version 5.0 is available for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and ME, and Macintosh OS 8.6, 9.0.4 and 9.1.

  • ARTESIA TECHNOLOGIES
    This Rockville, Md.-based digital asset management company has announced its support for the PRISM (Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata) specification version 1.0, an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) metadata standard for the publishing industry.

    The PRISM standard is designed to help publishers more closely manage the various forms of content they employ. Artesia Technologies has pledged to support PRISM commercially by the end of the year, which also means that in the future, a publishing professional using TEAMS, Artesia's digital asset management system, will be able to employ an industry-consistent metadata vocabulary in preserving new content.

  • DIAMONDSOFT INC.
    This Mill Valley, Calif.-based developer of the Font Reserve and Font Reserve Server font-management products has announced a plug-in for Adobe's InDesign page-layout product. The Font Reserve plug-in for InDesign supports DiamondSoft's Font Sense technology to ensure that not only are the fonts automatically activated, but that the exact versions of the fonts are activated.

    The plug-in also activates fonts required by embedded graphics documents within the InDesign document and allows the user to choose when to deactivate the fonts (when the document is closed, when InDesign quits, or when the system is shutdown). The plug-in also supports a "collect fonts for output: feature and the ability to make a Font Reserve set of all the fonts required by the document.

  • HARLEQUIN LTD.
    This subsidiary of Global Graphics which has U.S. offices in Waltham, Mass., has signed an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) agreement with Monotype Systems Inc., of Rolling Meadows, Ill., a supplier of integrated PostScript output systems, for the Harlequin Jaws RIP (raster image processor) software, a PostScript Language Level III-compatible product.

    The software will be used in a range of Panther imagesetters and FasTRAK CTP devices for the newspaper and commercial printing industries. The Jaws RIP will be incorporated into Monotype Systems' PrePRESS product line and marketed under then name "Jaguar RIP."

    Additionally, Harlequin has unveiled the first demonstration of technology developed through its strategic alliance with Motorola's Computer Group. The goal of the alliance, which was announced in late February, is to provide high-end embedded RIP systems for driving mid-range to high-end multifunction peripherals, copiers and printers, large-format printers, digital printing systems and digital servers.

    Lastly, Harlequin has reached an agreement with Destiny Technology Corp. of Taiwan, to embed Harlequin's RIP and PDF (portable document format) technology into Destiny's proprietary embedded controllers. The deal will enable digital-printing equipment manufacturers to shorten their development cycles for low- to mid-range monochromatic and color copiers, printers and digital printing systems. Under the agreement, Destiny will embed Harlequin's products onto its current range of controller platforms for existing and potential customers who are predominantly in Japan and the rest of Asia.

  • PAGEFLEX INC.
    In conjunction with Digital Graffiti Inc., this wholly owned subsidiary of Bitstream Inc. has announced a worldwide co-marketing agreement to cross-promote and offer customers integrated variable data printing (VDP) tools.

    Under the agreement, the companies plan to provide distribution and deployment of demonstration software to prospective clients. Digital Graffiti is committed to becoming the digital asset management systems of choice for variable data tools.

    In addition, Cambridge, Mass.-based Pageflex has announced that Mpower will be the variable data composition tool to support San Francisco-based httprint Inc.'s eCommerce and Print Services groups. Pageflex Mpower software enables businesses to design and produce variable data documents, including brochures, stationery, business cards, and marketing materials that can be customized to reach specific groups and individuals.

  • PROIMAGE LTD.
    The DAILY RACING FORM (100k) has chosen NewsWay to manage the digital workflow from its New York editorial offices to its seven print sites. The Israel-based ProImage's NewsWay is a browser-based system that designs and tracks production plans, accepts Quark pages and data from proprietary systems, produces soft and hard proofs, transmits pages, page pairs and produces plate-ready bitmap images for each print site.

    Based on the edition plan and production schedule, NewsWay routes the pages to the respective print sites. NewsWay's customizable Edition Planner automates many aspects of the edition building process.

  • TERA SPA
    The NEW STRAITS TIMES (180k) of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has decided to change its existing publishing system and more than 500 seats spread among seven publications will be using Tera's GN3 Publishing System by the end of 2001.

    The installation will take seven weeks with plans to begin by the end of July. NEW STRAITS TIMES will also be installing TARK, the asset management system that is completely Web-based and allows on-line connection and use worldwide

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES INC.
    This Chicago-based provider of television and movie information has announced that it has purchased a majority interest in TV Data Technologies, LLP of Glens Falls, N.Y.

    The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. TV Data Technologies will continue to serve its customers under the TV Data name and brand. Sales responsibilities will remain with the current TV Data staff.

    Together, TMS and TV Data provide more than 4000 customers, including newspapers, on-line services, broadcasters, cable systems and other companies, with print and electronic TV, movie and Internet listings, paginated entertainment information products, data feeds, monthly cable guides and other information products.

    This Netherlands-based company has announced smart Connection, a workflow tool based on Adobe InDesign and InCopy. WoodWing Smart Connection's workflow features prevent users from making mistakes and take care of managing shared files on any file server accessible from InDesign and InCopy.

    Also, WoodWing has introduced version 1.5 of its Smart Styles. Version 1.5 extends the usability of Smart Styles beyond its original newspaper and magazine market. Smart Styles delivers formatting capabilities to Adobe InDesign users. All formatting options of a page item, including multiple text styles, can be set at once using a page item form the Style Library as an example.

    This Grandville, Mich.-based provider of color, light and shape technology tools has announced its 2001 Densitometer Seminar schedule, a series of free seminars. These "Improving Your Pressroom Quality Control" seminars are focused on providing hands-on use of densitometers in graphic arts applications.
