  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    This San Jose-based maker of software for Web, print and dynamic media has announced the availability of Photoshop Elements, based on its Adobe Photoshop software.

    Photoshop Elements provides unskilled users access to digital imaging features. The product allows for digital image capture, cropping, straightening, red-eye removal and brightness adjustment. The product has dodge, burn and sponge tools. The product is available in both Windows and Macintosh versions.

    Photoshop Elements is available for $99 from Adobe, with upgrades from Photoshop LE, PhotoDeluxe and selected competitive digital imaging products for $69.

  • ENFOCUS SOFTWARE INC.
    This wholly owned, San Mateo, Calif.-based subsidiary of Artwork Systems has signed a distribution agreement with Ingram Micro Inc. of Santa Ana, Calif., for the distribution of its PDF (Portable Document Format) systems in North America. Enfocus' PitStop Professional, PitStop Server, PowerUp PDF and WebPerfect PDF provide automated and interactive capabilities for editing, correcting and validating PDF documents and workflows.

    Ingram Micro will provide Enfocus software products to its traditional value-added resellers that service the graphic arts and enterprise markets. Additionally, Enfocus is participating in Ingram Micro's Partnership America government reseller program, offering products, discounts and support for government and education customers.

  • LANTANA RESEARCH SOFTWARE CORP.
    This Fremont, Calif.-based company has announced the release of Variform PDF (Portable Document Format), which merges data from local data sources with Acrobat Forms. Lantana's Variform PDF is designed for any site with mail merge, forms filling and other variable data applications. Variform PDF requires Adobe Acrobat 4.05 or newer and is available for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT.

    Also announced by Lantana is Stratify PDF, an Acrobat plug-in that adds layers to PDF documents. Stratify PDF is designed for publishers and designers to create and maintain different versions of their work. With Stratify PDF, users can create named layers and move existing objects onto them, take existing pages and make them layers of another page, and it also allows users to show or hide, as well as merge layers.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    The TIMES (75k) of Shreveport, La., has signed a contract for AdBase with this Melbourne, Fla.-based provider of advertising systems. The TIMES purchased a 32-seat AdBase system for classified liner and display ad input, ad layout and classified pagination. Windows NT clients and servers will be utilized with an SQL database.

    The TIMES' classified front-end task force looked at many systems to replace the 10-year-old SII classified system before choosing Mactive's AdBase system for its customer support, flexible rate-building engine and on-line capabilities.

  • MANAGING EDTIOR INC.
    This Jenkintown, Pa.-based software company has made a number of recent announcements:

    -- The company, known as MEI, has entered into an agreement to become the exclusive distributor of the Maxim software products in The Americas. Maxim is a suite of software tools covering interactive advertising sales, contact management, marketing, promotion, circulation and fulfillment.

    -- MEI has announced a mid-summer release date for AdsUp, a new remote ad-order entry system designed for use with the Palm OS. AdsUp guides salespersons through the insertion process with an interface, while providing feedback on production deadlines.

    -- The company has announced the formation of MEIworks, its consulting services division. MEI is expanding its services to address business needs assessment, workflow analysis, technology strategy, systems design and integration, project management, training, implementation and ongoing support.

    -- MEI has released is an upgrade to ClassForce, MEI's point-and-shoot pagination system for small- to medium-sized publications. New features to ClassForce 3.0 include double-truck support for automatic placement of spread ads, and support for breakable liners, allowing users to split items that are longer than the column.

    -- MEI will soon release the Windows version of Roundhouse Ad Tracking System. Version 2.5 will feature Windows compatibility, offering PC-based publishers an enterprise-wide advertising workflow system with benefits to ad builders, manufacturing managers, sales reps, customers and editorial paginators.

  • METACOMMUNICATIONS INC.
    Based in Iowa City, Iowa, this software developer has announced version 3.01 of its Job Manager software, which includes integration with Intuit's Quickbooks and MYOB's Accounting Plus accounting software systems.

    MetaCommunications' Job Manager is an electronic job tracking, costing and billing software system for the graphic arts industry, and allows one to capture, manage and track employee time/material usage on-line, which provides instant job status, activity reports, cost analysis and generates invoices automatically when a job is complete.

    Additionally, Pitman Co. of Totowa, N.J., has selected Virtual Ticket and Job Manager software packages for nationwide distribution. The Pitman distribution agreement comes on the heels of an announcement by MetaCommunications that it will release automated interfaces to some of the third-party accounting software packages presently on the market.

  • SAXOTECH INC.
    GoErie.com has launched a new mobile version of its on-line news content using one of the modules of the Publicus Online Publishing System from this Rockville, Md.-based division of the Danish publishing systems supplier.

    GoErie.com began using Publicus last fall, and CyberInk, a wholly owned subsidiary of Times Publishing Co. and the company that created the portal site, added the Multi-Channel Module to its base system in February. The Multi-Channel Module enables Publicus to serve content to a variety of electronic platforms, including handheld computers (PDAs), e-mail digests and WebTV.

    Currently, GoErie.com's Mobile Edition, of which SAXoTECH hosts the portal site at the company's data-center in Reston, Va., has 1893 registered users and is averaging 250,000 unique visitors per month.

    Knight Ridder/Tribune OnePages and the DETROIT FREE PRESS are offering a new version of YaksCorner.com to complement Yak's Corner, the nationally syndicated educational children's feature. The content on YaksCorner.com will tie into the stories featured each week in the Yak's Corner page.

    Additionally, a new guide for teachers will now be provided to all Yak's Corner newspaper partners to assist in bringing the Yak into the classroom. The guide will also include information on how it ties into national educational standards.

    L'UNITA (200k) of Rome, Italy, has selected this company's editorial system to re-launch after a six-month hiatus. Unisys editorial systems will manage both the print and on-line versions in an integrated manner.

    According to the agreement, Unisys will supply L'UNITA with the NewsContent Manager-Hermes and News Gathering Manager systems running on two Sun servers.

    Additionally, Unisys will provide the paper with an short message service (SMS), through which users will be able to send a message to the Internet site by simply dialing a dedicated phone number and receive news directly from the Web on their mobile phone.
