  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    This Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company's LiveIQue now features image support, a "spider" feature to spin off LiveIQue pages to static HTML files, greater security and the capability to make you web site available to handheld devices such as a Palm, a Windows CE computer and cell phones.

    With the newest version of NewsEditPro IQue, version 3.3, one can now introduce photos and graphics to web sites by dragging and dropping images on stories to have the two appear together. An internal "spider" can be programmed to "crawl" through LiveIQue templates and download the current stories and images specified by those templates. The 2.0 version includes such features as flexible organization, web administration, expanding vocabulary and caching.

    Also at Baseview, ProductionManagerPro has made archiving improvements. Included in the new version, 1.5, is the ability to enter orders via ProductionManagerPro, while existing features have been upgraded to make ad-production flow smoothly. New features to DragX, Baseview's pagination XTension for Quark XPress, include the ability to preview an ad while on the Query screen; a news action allows users to send PDFs (Portable Document Format) to a designated location by selecting the associated status, and subfolders in the customer elements folder to help organize multiple items.

    Lastly, Baseview has released the 2.0 version of CirculationPro, which includes features such as preauthorized payment and Web import, allowing customers to begin or end subscriptions, schedule vacations, view account information and make payments via a publication's web site.

  • GEAC PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
    This Tampa, Fla.-based division of Geac Computer Corp. Ltd. of Toronto, Canada, has announced an extensive schedule for participation in publishing industry events during the first half of 2001. In addition to participating in the discussion of the industry critical issues, Geac Publishing Systems will exhibit a series of new products that utilize handheld computing devices and Internet-enabled technology to cost effectively provide more information and tools to more people throughout the publishing enterprise.

  • INTERNATIONAL PREPRESS ASSOCIATION
    This Edina, Minn.-based trade association has announced the release of "Profiting from New Revenue Streams," a landmark study exploring how pre-press companies have successfully augmented their businesses with new, non-traditional products and services; categories include creative and design services, e-commerce, digital printing and asset management, and facilities management.

    The IPA Marketing & Sales Committee commissioned the report to serve as an important business tool for IPA members and other service providers in the graphic arts industry looking to diversify into new product areas.

  • NET-LINX PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS
    The (Santa Fe) NEW MEXICAN (22k) is the first U.S. newspaper to purchase an Insiight Editorial System from this Dresden, Germany-based provider which has U.S. offices in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Sacramento. The 67-seat system will replace the paper's CText DOS-based system and DOS-based applications.

    The system is NT-based and is deployed on a server farm, offering high-quality performance and server redundancy. Insiight, originally developed by System Integrators Inc., is an architecture (the Universal NewsGram Architecture) that allows a single interface to access multiple applications and systems, fulfilling the need for corporate-wide integration of commercial applications and database platforms. The system introduces new framework known as Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), which are "connected" to the framework using CORBA connectors.

  • SAXOTECH INC.
    This Rockville, Mass.-based developer of content management systems has released an upgraded version, 4.1, of the Publicus Online Publishing System. Using keywords developed for SAXoTECH's Publicus, publishers can now describe the contents of stories in the Publicus database and then use these descriptions to present content wherever and whenever required.

    With the new keyword system, combinations of keywords attached to the content provide the context for the system to format and present the content in different areas of the site. The keywords tell the Publicus software what section(s) the story belongs in, as well as what other stories are related.

  • SEECOLOR
    This Mountain View, Calif.-based developer of expert color halftone proofing software has announced a number of sales in Europe including, Germany and France.

    Computer-To-Proof software incorporates tools to control "post-RIPped" halftone dots from the original file as well as the density, dot area and press-ink color. The software takes into account press density, dot gain and the contaminated colors of printing press inks, and uses files post-RIPped at imaging resolutions up to 150 line screen. USA TODAY (1.3m) uses SeeColor software to remotely control print quality at its 39 global print sites.

  • SILCON GRAPHICS INC.
    Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., this company has donated two visual workstations to power the system at New York University (NYU), ensuring that multi-user classes will be conducted without interruption. Silicon Graphics Inc.'s (SGI) systems will benefit students of the Graphic Communications, Management and Technology program.

    Blanchard Systems Inc. of New Orleans, and DALiM Software of Germany have installed these workflow systems at NYU, including TWiST workflow and LiTHO page-makeup and digital retouching software.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES
    The WINSTON-SALEM (NC) JOURNAL (128k) has updated its pre-press systems now using this Nazareth, Pa.-based company's version 9.22 software to control and monitor ad production workflow.

    The Software Consulting Services' SCS/Track system offers electronic workflow and enables all advertising and production staff to monitor the status of any ad and its component at any given moment, in addition to providing ad make-up staff prioritized access to ad files. SCS/Track automatically stamps each job with location, date and time, so ads can be located form any SCS/Track station. The JOURNAL also uses SCS's Layout-8000 automated ad dummying system and has recently purchased SCS/LinX to dummy special sections with Quark XPress.

  • WOODWING SOFTWARE
    The publishing systems group of Unisys has announced a development agreement with this Netherlands-based software provider. WoodWing will provide Unisys with an Adobe InDesign plug-in technology and development services to further the integration of the Unisys e-@ction News Content Manager-Hermes, a page-layout application becoming a market standard.

    For publishers, these enhancements will ease the transition to the Unisys editorial and pagination systems by reducing user-training time, resulting a faster return on investment and systems implementation. The new integration to allow layouts to be exported from InDesign and translated into News Content Manager-Hermes layouts will be available for both the PC-Windows and Macintosh platforms.
