  • CLICKSHARE SERVICE CORP.
    Iowa's SIOUX CITY JOURNAL (48k) has launched a program designed to test the willingness of print subscribers to buy additional or enhanced content on-line. Unlike other web sites, JOURNAL subscribers will purchase globally from a single local account.

    The JOURNAL is using customer exchange technology provided by Clickshare Service Corp. of Williamstown, Mass., allowing consumers to have one account at the Sioux City daily, yet anonymously purchase music, text, videos, software at other web sites without having to repeatedly pass around a credit-card number, fill out forms or give up personal information.

    Among contributors of content to the pilot is Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News (KRT).

  • GDT-NOVA
    The ASBURY PARK PRESS (160k) of Pleasantville, N.J., has become the first Gannett newspaper to purchase AdEZ suite of on-line publishing products internally called ClassWeb by Gannett Corp. GDT-Nova's AdEZ/ClassWeb suite will provide the PRESS with the ability to create, cost and preview employment, general merchandise, automotive, real estate and legal advertisements on the Web.

    In addition, GDT-Nova's Connex XML server utilized the newspaper's front-end system publishing engine to cost and typeset advertisements, thereby eliminating errors in rating, page breaks and formatting. AdEZ/ClassWeb supports on-line credit-card payments and offers an "ad assistant" feature that offers telephone assistance to customers.

    I.M.A.G.E. INC. Austin, Texas-based T3 has selected this New York-based company to customize and implement new content management technology. This partnership with I.M.A.G.E. marks the first time that both the QuarkDMS (Quark Digital Media System) and QPS will be used in conjunction in the United States.

  • KNIGHTRIDDER.COM
    This San Jose-based founder of Real Cities has announced a major restructuring designed to focus resources on recruitment classified sales, building a new single platform for the Real Cities Network.

    The planned restructuring will enable KnightRidder.com to double the size of its on-line employment sales force in order to lead the recruitment space. Although 68 persons will be laid off, 34 new positions will be created and filled.

    KnightRidder.com has also announced that the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS (1m) will join the network as the Real Cities partner in the New York City market. By joining the Network, www.nydailynews.com will build and carry out the Network's local web directory as well as participate in national advertising and distribution deals.

    This St. Paul, Minn.-based company has announced a $2 million contract with Trinity Mirror, publishing 176 titles in the U.K., including THE MIRROR (5.7m). Trinity Mirror will use Lawson's e-business systems for financials, procurement, analytics and e-commerce to streamline and enhance the quality of financial information within the group, and to achieve flexibility and savings. Trinity Mirror chose Lawson over Oracle, PeopleSoft and JD Edwards based on the Web-based architecture, flexible core reporting, personalized Web-entry screens and significantly lower total cost of ownership over the other enterprise application vendors.     Based in Scottsdale, Ariz., this software developer for cross-media publishing has announced that it is reaching new milestones with nearly 300 users consisting of recruiters, hiring managers and human resources managers and 167 corporations. Pentawave's e-cruiting product, IdealHire, enables local media to offer companies the ability to quick find qualified matched and ranked candidates.

    Based in Washington, D.C., this new photojournalism web site has launched the beta version of a service that will allow photojournalists worldwide to deliver their pictures of breaking news directly to media organizations.

    picSmart works on behalf of the marketplace for both photojournalists and photo editors. The site works to aggregate photojournalists and connect them and their work to photo buyers enabling photographers to syndicate their work to a worldwide network of publications, while retaining copyright and control over their images.

    Based in Troy, N.Y., this Internet infrastructure provider has announced that Murphy McGinnis Media, publisher of 27 daily and weekly newspapers in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin, has selected its Internet car-buying turnkey, CarCast.

    PowerAdz's CarCast allows newspapers to provide their readers with a car-buying service that features the combined inventory of their local auto dealers, a full-feature purchase request system and a wide variety of co-branded content. Murphy McGinnis' properties join more than 50 newspaper affiliates using CarCast as their on-line automotive system, including the DALLAS MORNING NEWS (400k), OMAHA WORLD HERALD (124k), ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER (353k) and the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE (162k).

  • REALTIMEIMAGE
    Xpedx, based in San Bruno, Calif., has signed an agreement with this developer of imaging products and services for the graphic arts and medical communities, to distribute the RealTimeProofClassic proofing system, a client-server software package that integrates into existing workflows, enabling customers to stream high-resolution files directly from their Local Area Network.

    The agreement closely follows RealTimeImage's announcement that it has received $9 million in funding from investors including DOR Venture, Scitex Corp., Intel 64 Fund, Newbury Ventures and TDA Capital Partners.

  • THE SOFTWARE CONSTRUCTION CO.
    This Atlanta-based developer of media management tools has announced the sale and installation of the MediaServer multimedia production and archive database system to the PORTLAND PRESS HERALD (75k) and the MAINE SUNDAY TELEGRAM (125k).

    The SCC system provides access to 30 concurrent MediaGrid and web browser users on both Windows and Macintosh workstations and replaces a legacy Vu/Text text archiving system. The MediaServer system is based on two dual 550-megahertz processor Compaq servers, each containing 1-gigabytes of random access memory and sharing more than 200-gigabytes of redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) storage via a fibre-optic bus. The servers are configured as a Microsoft Cluster, providing maximum availability of server resources as well as maximum fault tolerance for both data and hardware.

    This Paris, France-based organization is preparing to launch global research into the effectiveness of advertising as part of a strategy for the marketing of newspapers to global brands.

    As a first step, WAN asked Diane Newman, director of information at the new Business a.m. in Scotland, to present, at conference to be held tomorrow and Friday in Monte Carlo, a global overview of research into advertising effectiveness, and to focus on what works best.     This Grandville, Mich.-based provider of technology measuring color and light has announced that it has begun customer shipments of its new Auto Tracking Densitometer (ATD) for News. X-Rite's ATD News automates and substantially speeds the process of evaluating and adjusting gray balance in newspaper production. The system measures and reports density levels from continuous-bolor rules as small as 2.0mm in height.

    ATD News is designed specifically for newspaper presses, and was developed with the benefit of global research collected from newspaper pressroom professionals and global newspaper associations such as the Newspaper Association of America, Ifra and the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association. The system delivers speed, accuracy and process control advantages to press operators still relying on manual densitometers or visual reference for color quality monitoring.
