Through several agreements with newspaper networks, alternative papers and papers in Canada, Advertise123.com can be used to place classifieds in more than 5500 papers. Gannett, a multimedia company based in Arlington, Va., has announced a strategic partnership with New York-based Space.com which gives Gannett a stake in the on-line enterprise devoted to the cosmos. Space.com was formed by former CNN financial journalist Lou Dobbs. Space.com will acquire Gannett's space-oriented holdings, including the weekly newspaper SPACE NEWS, spacenews.com and the Space Online web sites operated by Gannett's FLORIDA TODAY daily newspaper in Melbourne, Fla., which is near Cape Canaveral. Gannett will contribute marketing support across its print and broadcast outlets, including USA TODAY, and an undisclosed amount of cash to Space.com.. Chicago-based Goss Holdings, parent of the press manufacturer Goss Graphic Systems Inc., has announced a sharp increase in new orders in the third quarter, rising from $90.2 million in 1999 to $208.7 million this year. Net sales grew from $112.2 million to $145.4 million. Gross profit grew from $18.4 million to $27.9 million; earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were up from a loss of $8 million last year to a positive $13.2 million this year. Trenton, N.J.-based Journal Register has announced completion of the sale of THE TELEGRAPH of Alton, Ill., to Freedom Communications Inc. of Irvine, Calif. The industry trade group based in Vienna, Va., has announced that U.S. daily newspapers consumed 0.4 percent less newsprint in September 2000 than in the same month in 1999, falling from 790,000 metric tons to 787,000 metric tons. Inventories declined 5.1 percent, from more then 1 million tons, a 39-day supply, in 1999 to 978,000 tons, a 37-day supply, in 2000. The NAA is on the Web at http://www.naa.org/. New York Times Digital, the Times Co.'s on-line arm, has announced sizable jumps in traffic to the three major web sites it operates. Page views at the NEW YORK TIMES web site, http://www.nytimes.com/, grew 42.8 percent, while the BOSTON GLOBE site, http://www.boston.com/, recorded a 22.7 percent gain and the New York local city guide, http://www.newyorktoday.com/, was up 49.7 percent. St. Louis-based Pulitzer has announced that revenues in September grew 28.3 percent over the 1999 period, jumping from $30.2 million to $38.7 million, including acquisitions and dispositions. Excluding properties bought and sold, revenues were up 7.1 percent. At the flagship ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, circulation slipped 1.9 percent in September, to 297,101. Sunday circulation was up 0.5 percent, to 505,966. Ad linage was off 6.3 percent, to 216,300 inches. Classified was down slightly, to 92,600 inches; national (the smallest category) was up 48.1 percent, to 16,000 inches, and retail slumped 15.4 percent, to 52,600 inches. Franklin, Tenn.-based Publishing Group has announced that the circulation of its weekly magazine supplement AMERICAN PROFILE has topped 2 million, six months after the publication debuted in community newspapers (see NEWSINC., Oct. 23, 2000). AMERICAN PROFILE now is distributed in more than 450 newspapers in three of five planned regions. Bi-weekly production will give way to weekly output Nov. 5. Chicago-based Tribune has announced that it will sell Times Mirror Magazines, which it acquired with Times Mirror Co. in June, to Time Inc. of New York for $475 million. Proceeds from he cash transaction will be used to reduce debt, which now exceeds $4 billion, and repurchase Tribune stock. No loss or gain will be reported from the sale, as Tribune had accounted for the magazine group as assets held for sale.
