  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    The San Jose-based company has announced that it is shipping the latest version of its professional web-creation software. Adobe GoLive Version 5.0 is integrated with Adobe's other web-design tools, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, LiveMotion, Premiere and After Effects, and provides workflow enhancements for collaborative web design.

    This integration streamlines the web workflow with support of .psd, .ai and .liv files, while the use of the Photoshop imaging engine within GoLive makes the files web-ready. The latest version of GoLive includes more than 100 new features, such as "360Code" that enables complete control over any web source code.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    This Quark Golden Partner, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has released several new XTensions for both its production and editorial departments. Now, with updates within ProductionManagerPro, Baseview's digital asset management system and ad production database, publishers can transmit proofs to advertisers and enter orders into the database.

    Baseview has also developed a new version, 1.5, of their AdGrabber XTension, due in October, which grabs the finished ads from production databases and puts them on QuarkXPress pages, making it easy for remote locations to come together at a single publishing facility and also check sizes of incoming ads against what has been dummied.

    Additionally, Baseview's QTools XTension, featuring several functions including Fit Box to Text, Fit Text to Box and Fit Head, as well as DragX, the drag-and-drop pagination XTension, have been rewritten to be QuarkXPress 4 native, as well as PowerPC native.

    The School of Printing Management at the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has installed 14 new NewsEditPro IQue workstations along with eight pagination stations, including QTools and DragX. RIT is now using Baseview's IQue Editorial System in its New Media program to teach students about content building, archiving and publishing to various media. The CHATTANOOGA TIMES/FREE PRESS (41k) also installed the editorial software.

    Several national newspapers have purchased BlackMagic News Extra from the North Canton, Ohio-based company for their color-management requirements. Among the newspapers to implement GEI'S BlackMagic News Extra are the NEW YORK TIMES (1.2m), the HARTFORD COURANT (229k) and the WASHINGTON TIMES (98k).

    The system addresses the automated proofing of high-resolution screened bitmaps, prior to imaging to film or direct-to-plate and produces color proofs on newsprint using large-format inkjet printers. Features of the system include remote proofing with ICC profiles, Real Dot Technology, which reproduces the actual dot from the proof, plate changes for different editions and cross-platform access.

    The global Internet marketplace for content services, based in Renton, Wash., has announced that visitors to Starnews.com, the Internet edition of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR (229k), can now purchase rights to distribute and reprint the newspaper's content using Instant Clearance Service, which allows visitors to buy a license to an article.

    Licensing rights are available for physical and electronic distribution, including reprints, photocopies, postings on a web site, links and e-mail distribution, allowing iCopyright to deliver the content to the buyer in the specified format. iCopyright is working with such publishers and content distributors as the LOS ANGELES TIMES (1.2m), Ziff Davis Media, CMP Media, COMTEX News Network and bizjournals.com.

    The San Jose-based network of city and regional web sites launched an on-line resource that was dedicated to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) held in Los Angeles. Coverage featured live chats with party officials and candidates, including California Gov. Gray Davis; former State Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown; Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, and Doug Hattaway, the national spokesman for the Gore 2000 campaign.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    The Chicago-based media content provider announced that it is creating two new operating units in its News and Features Division to focus on multimedia opportunities and international content syndication.

    The two new groups will work in conjunction with TMS' domestic syndication and licensing groups. TMS, a subsidiary of Tribune Co., will integrate the domestic, international and new-media functions of the Los Angeles Time Syndicate (LATS) into its operations; the integration process is expected to be completed by mid-October.
