    This San Jose-based software developer has announced the availability of six new OpenType font families designed to enhance the company's suite of professional publishing tools, including Adobe InDesign 1.5 software.

    Developed by both Adobe and Microsoft Corp., the OpenType font format, provides improved cross-platform document portability that can be installed on both Macintosh and Windows computers; an expanded character set based on the international Unicode encoding standard for rich linguistic support; advanced typographic capabilities related to glyph positioning and glyph substitution that allow for the inclusion of numerous alternate glyphs in one file; a more compact font outline data structure for smaller font file sizes; built-in support for Windows 2000, and support in Adobe InDesign 1.5 software that allows for easy use of OpenType's advanced typographic features.

  • ALTAMIRA GROUP INC.
    The CHICAGO SUN TIMES' (528k) pre-press staff has selected the Burbank, Calif.-based digital imaging and Internet integration strategies company's Genuine Fractals PrintPro, imaging technology that allows the scaling of images without loss of quality.

    Genuine Fractals transforms digital images into resolution-independent files by eliminating the relationship between pixels and resolution. Once an image is established and finalized in a program such as Adobe Photoshop, it is then encoded using Genuine Fractals proprietary mathematical algorithms, replacing the pixels of that final image with a new mathematically based file format.

    NSIcom Ltd. has entered into a long-term agreement to license Font Fusion. Cambridge, Mass.-based Bistream's smallest, most advanced font rasterizing engine, Font Fusion is the convergence of its T2K and TrueDoc technology in an object-oriented architecture. NSIcom will incorporate Font Fusion in JSCP, NSIcom's Java Virtual Machine (JVM), for the embedded environment.

    Font Fusion provides developers with full font fidelity and high-quality typographic output at any resolution on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the original character shapes. It is designed for operating systems, software applications, web applications, low-resolution screen devices, multimedia servers, high-definition television screens (HDTVs), set-top boxes, continuous tone printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), other embedded systems and Internet and wireless appliances.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    This Melbourne, Fla.-based provider of advertising systems for the newspaper industry has announced that the UNION-NEWS (113k), published Monday-Saturday, and SUNDAY REPUBLICAN (150k) both of Springfield, Mass., signed a contract for an AdBase system.

    The contract includes 50 Microsoft Windows NT clients and two Sun servers with an Oracle database. AdBase will be implemented in phases, beginning with classified, followed by display, pre-prints and accounts receivable.


  • PROIMAGE AMERICA
    USA TODAY (1m) has purchased five more NewsWay systems to add to its NewsWay digital workflow installation. Two of the new ProImage systems are in Milan, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium, and the other three are in Lansing, Mich., Las Vegas and Raleigh, N.C.

    NewsWay manages the transmission of pages and also facilitates page assembly from bitmaps from various production sources. The individual bitmaps are moved to remote sites and assembled there.

    ProImage has also announced that Delaware's WILMINGTON NEWS JOURNAL has ordered a NewsWay Ink Management system, which will calculate and deliver "key" values to the JOURNAL's Goss MPCS ink control system and Goss presses. It allows for the user to preset a value on two presses with different press control management systems.

    Pennsylvania's POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN (30k) and EVENING HERALD (10k) of Shenandoah are now using in live production the Nazareth, Pa.-based company's JLayout, a display advertising dummying system developed in the Java programming language, from the developers of Layout-8000.

    Software Consulting Services' (SCS) JLayout, like Layout-8000, is platform-independent, running on Macintosh, Linux, UNIX and Windows without changes in code. Any operating system that runs Java 2 Standard Edition can run JLayout. It displays an enhanced interface and settings in control files can now be changed through "drag-and-drop." SCS will be sending JLayout and Layout-8000 Version 9 to its support customers.
