  • ENFOCUS SOFTWARE N.V.
A recent acquisition by Belgium's Artwork Systems Group N.V., a worldwide supplier of professional pre-press software solutions, has positioned Enfocus for rapid growth. Enfocus officials said that among the most important factors of the acquisition was the fact that Enfocus would remain an independent company, managed and staffed by the existing team.

As a subsidiary of Artwork Systems Group, Enfocus has gained additional resources that will help increase marketing, research and development and customer support. These resources will also help the company meet the demands for advanced PDF (Portable Document Format) editing applications.

  • INTERNATIONAL PRESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL
The news industry's technical standards body has released a beta version of its news markup language (NewsML) and has called for trial implementations.

At its annual general meeting in Geneva last week, more than 50 participating members of the IPTC, approved the public release of the first version of NewsML, a standard for the management of multimedia news based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

The organization encouraged the news industry to start development implementations while final support documentation is prepared before the planned ratification of the document data type (DTD) at the IPTC's October meeting in Amsterdam.

NewsML is the direct result of an IPTC initiative which started in October 1999, when the membership established a program called IPTC2000, whose goal was to deliver an XML-based standard to represent and manage news through its life cycle, including production, interchange and consumer use.

NewsML is an XML-based standard for all aspects of multimedia news creation, storage and delivery. At the heart of NewsML is the concept of the NewsItem which can contain various media -- text, photos, graphics, video -- together with all the meta-information that enables the recipient to understand the relationship between components and understand the roles of each component.

The Windsor, United Kingdom-based IPTC was established in 1965 to safeguard the telecommunications interests of the world's press; it is on the Web at http://www.iptc.org/.
