  • AGFA CORP.
    The Ridgefield Park, N.J.-based company, a subsidiary of Belgium's Agfa-Gevaert Group, announced that it has opened a Technology Learning Center (TLC) in Irvine, Calif. The new center, which is based on a similiar center in Teterboro, N.J., was designed primarily for end-users and prospective customers to observe live product demonstrations and obtain hands-on experiences with Agfa's workflow products.

    The TLC offers a digital conference room allowing visitors to follow an entire digital workflow from file creation to the finished plate. Products showcased at this site include Agfa's Galileo computer-to-plate devices, Avantra and Phoenix's line of imagesetters, the Apogee Series 2 Portable Document Format workflow products, AgfaJet Sherpa digital proofers and Polaroid's Polaproof.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    LiveIQue, Baseview's Internet publishing solution, has been installed by the Ohio-based MANSFIELD NEWS JOURNAL (40k). The NEWS JOURNAL is using LiveIQue, as well as NewsEditPro IQue, to keep its Web publication updated. The Bahamas-based FREEPORT NEWS installed 10 NewsEditPro IQue workstations, along with other editorial software. The two papers were among 32 sites working with Baseview this past May.

  • CREOSCITEX AMERICA INC.
    THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (2m) has purchased 56 CreoScitex Doelv 4newsV XL imagesetters as part of a multi-million dollar press expansion project to increase color capacity. Installation of the imagesetters at 17 print sites is scheduled for completion in mid-2000, replacing data film imaging equipment.

    The Dolev 4newsV XL is a custom-designed internal drum imagesetter that outputs more than 50 broadsheet newspaper pages or separations per hour. In addition, a CreoScitex application will provide the interface between the page-distribution system and the imagesetters, creating an automated workflow for imaging the pages broadcast to the remote print sites.

  • FUJITSU LTD.
    Japan's Fujitsu and Atlanta, Ga.-based Intacta Technologies Inc. announced an alliance concerning a totally new application of technology to the newspaper industry. Free software will be available on a page of the world's largest newspaper, YOMIURI SHIMBUN (10m), printed in machine-readable code.

    Fujitsu, under license from Intacta, has developed an application that encodes and prints virtually any software, including music files, high-resolution graphics or any executable computer application, on plain newspaper. When the specially coded box of printed dots is scanned into a computer, the printed dots are translated back into computer programs.

  • GEAC PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
    Tampa, Fla.-based Geac announced the recent test results of the Genera three-tiered architecture and database, which underlies much of its new Command Series publishing solution. The testing was conducted this past winter over the course of more than a week at Microsoft's California test facility with the support of Microsoft's Premiere Support for Developers (PSfD) program and generated a result of 14,953 ad bookings per hour.

    The Image Capture division of the Germany-based supplier has announced delivery of the Linoscan 1400, the replacement for the Saphir Ultra 2 desktop scanner, to the North American market. The Linoscan 1400 is ideal for professional designers, ad agencies, photographers, printers and pre-press shops, and comes with a cross-platform software kit (Linocolor Elite for Macintosh, Newcolor 4000 for Windows 95/98/NT).

  • HELIOS SOFTWARE GmbH
    The Hanover, Germany-based provider of network and pre-press software has announced it is now shipping its PCShare 3.0 file and print server running on UNIX-based servers. PCShare 3.0 is compatible with all Windows applications and supports mounting of drives and printers via the Windows network browser. Server features include SMB/CFIS, DHCP, WINS, WINS proxy, name service routing between network cards, and printing to local PC printers as well as to EtherShare queues.

    It is available for a wide variety of UNIX-based systems including Apple's Mac OS X Server and Linux Pentium-based servers. The menu-driven administration offers easy setup of users, groups, volumes, printers and DHCP from any PC or UNIX system on the network.

  • MODULO SYSTEMS CORP.
    Quark Inc. of Denver, Colo., and Cambridge, Mass.-based Modulo Systems announced that Modulo will develop and distribute the XTensions software that allows metadata to be exchanged between Quark Publishing System (QPS) and Quark Digital Media System (QuarkDMS).

    The communication between QPS and QuarkDMS will serve the needs of the publishers who need asset management and workflow capabilities. The XTensions software will allow publishers who do not need the full-fledged editorial workflow features of QPS to benefit from exact Quark copyfit information with QuarkDMS.

  • PROIMAGE AMERICA INC.
    The Princeton, N.J., output systems supplier has announced its latest enhancements to its NewsWay digital workflow system.

    NewsWay uses standard PC hardware to manage imposition, job planning, network workflow management, output management, resource scheduling and production tracking. The system will drive imagesetters and computer-to-plate equipment as well as interface to other existing equipment such as plate scanners. NewsWay is in daily use with such printer/publishers as USA TODAY, the LOS ANGELES TIMES, NEWSWEEK, Paris-based LIBERATION, London-based The Telegraph Group and Applied Graphics Technology of New Jersey.

    ProImage's iWay, which provides sophisticated on-line digital workflow and e-commerce facilities for commercial printers, was released last spring.
