Owned by Chicago-based Classified Ventures Inc., Apartments.com has announced that it recently added localized versions of its national on-line apartment guide to eight additional affiliates. Some significant newspapers included among the most recent web site integration are the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, WASHINGTON POST, LOS ANGELES TIMES and the NEW YORK TIMES. Currently the second-most trafficked on-line apartment guide, the company says that they expect to advance into the number one spot this year as they continue to expand to additional affiliate markets. Apartments.com is now available on more than 79 newspaper web sites, with its remaining affiliates expected to be activated by mid-2000. Apartments.com is on the Web at http://www.apartments.com. Michigan's CADILLAC NEWS (9k) is now using Baseview's CirculationPro to manage its subscribers, distribution and preprint handling. A long-time Baseview advertising and editorial client, the paper was one of 41 sites installing, upgrading, converting and retraining with Baseview during April. The Chambersburg, Pa.-based PUBLIC OPINION (21k) and Illinois' WATSEKA TIMES-REPUBLIC (3k), have both installed Baseview's ad management system, AdManagerPro, as well as ClassFlow, and Xtension for paginating classified ads. Also using Baseview's AdManagerPro is the JACKSONVILLE (N.C.) DAILY NEWS, which has installed the ad managing system on 11 workstations, then combined databases with three other local papers, including the KINSTON FREE PRESS, the SUN JOURNAL of New Bern, and the HAVELOCK NEWS. The four integrated sites are using T-1 data lines to consolidate information. Baseview, a division of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. that is based in Ann Arbor, Mich., is on the Web at http://www.baseview.com/. The Loomis, Calif.-based supplier of tear sheet services has announced its selection by Texas' SAN ANTONIO NEWS-EXPRESS to use CE's Electronic Tear Sheet Service, which automates the way that tear sheet operations are performed -- digitizing them and mading them available on an intranet for the NEWS-EXPRESS on a daily basis. CE is on the Web at http://www.ceengineering.com/. The division of Geac Computer Corp. Ltd., has announced the sale of its Matrix circulation system to Independent Newspapers Ltd. (INL) of Wellington, New Zealand, for its 30,000-circulation Christchurch Press Company Ltd. affiliate. Geac is located on the Web at http://www.geac.com/. The developer of raster image processing (RIP) software that is a subsidiary of Global Graphics of Dusseldorf, Germany, has said the it has released MAXWorkFlow, a digital workflow management system, as well as the launched RipFlow, its next -generation RIP technology. The new MAXWorkFlow system combines Harlequin's RipFlow technologies and Harris Publishing Systems' workflow management software to provide an easy-to-use yet powerful digital output manager. Harlequin, which has U.S. offices in Waltham, Mass., can be found on the Web at http://www.harlequin.com/. The Darmstadt, Germany-based trade association has extended its services to the Russian market by setting up an office in Moscow, and has launched the Russian version of its magazine, NEWSPAPER TECHNIQUES, this last May. Five thousand copies of the magazine, the Moscow office's primary service, have been printed for the first issue called IGAZETNIJE TEKHNOLOGII and have been distributed free of charge to major publishers, printing houses, local manufacturers, Internet providers and authorities in charge of print publishing issues. The 96-page bi-monthly publication will begin publishing on a monthly basis in 2001. IFRA can be found on the Web at http://www.ifra.com/ The Melbourne, Fla.-based system advertising front-end supplier announced in May that Cayman Free Press Ltd., publishers of the CAYMANIAN COMPASS (15k), signed a contract for an AdBase system. The paper will immediately implement the use of AdBooker for classified and retail ad order entry, as well as Mactive's new Accounts Receivable package, Money Manager. This is Mactive's second international sale and its first venture into the Caribbean. Mactive Inc. can be located on the Web at http://www.mactiveinc.com/. The Sydney, Australia-based newspaper system supplier has introduced the newest version of its database-centered advertising software for newspapers and magazines, Version 5. All maintenance utilities have been rewritten to incorporate new features, which include ad makeup screens, security features, contract management capabilities and Internet ad entry and publishing. An on-line data warehousing facility creates and maintains a structured history database of ad transactions for detailed reporting and analysis. Beginning with Version 5, Pongrass advertising software can now be licensed by site or by enterprise, which keeps per seat cost low, with no additional server charges for Pongrass or Sybase database software regardless of the number of systems. Pongrass is on the Web at http://www.pongrass.com.au/. The Nazareth, Pa.-based system supplier has installed the newest version of GoodNews integrated editorial and news pagination system, GN3, at DIARIO DE YUCATAN (70k), the largest newspaper in southeastern Mexico. GN3, developed by Tera S.p.A. of Italy and distributed by SCS, employs a client-server architecture with Microsoft's SQL Server for data management. Running on Windows NT, GN3 includes a text editor, frame editor and a new edition management module. DIARIO DE YUCATAN also uses SCS' Layout-8000 automated ad dummying system, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The American Newspaper Publishers Association/Research Institute (ANPA/RI) -- now the Newspaper Association of America -- was the first developer of automated advertising dummying systems. These programs of the early '70s ran on IBM 1130s and PDP 8s. In February 1980, Layout-80 was first installed at Pennsylvania's POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN and the PITTSBURGH PRESS and POST GAZETTE, as well as Indiana's BLOOMSBERG HERALD TELEPHONE. Part of the reason for the success of the Layout technology and its direct successors has been its platform independence. ANPA board member Jim Knight of Knight-Ridder didn't want ANPA/RI to develop software for just DEC systems -- partially because Knight-Ridder supported Hewlett-Packard equipment. SCS is on the Web at http://www.newspapersystems.com/. The WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL (87k), the JOURNAL TIMES (43k), the LA CROSSE TRIBUNE (32k) and the CAPITAL TIMES (20k) -- all of Wisconsin -- have selected T/ONE's Merlin System as an enterprise solution for their image archiving requirements. All four papers will maintain a virtual separation of their image collections on Merlin, but the centralized system will allow the four papers to share images. T/ONE, based in Quincy, Mass., can be found on the Web at http://www.t-1.com/. --30-- COLE'S NEWSWIRE is compiled by Aimee Beck and distributed by The Cole Group, publishers of THE COLE PAPERS, COLE'S NOTES and NEWSINC., and consultants to newspapers and magazines worldwide.
