  • COX NEWSPAPERS
    The Atlanta-based newspaper publisher has said that it has added new features to its web site http://www.coxnews.com/. The material comes from Cox Newspapers' 16 daily papers, its news service, the Washington Bureau and other operations. Some of the new features of the site:

  • Top stories: Four to five stories a day are posted from the Cox papers and the Cox Washington Bureau to give a taste of what Cox is covering. Daily top stories are kept online for 30 days.

  • Cox columnists: Columnists who originate with CoxNet, the Cox News Service, are posted here as their home on the web. Columnists include Howard Kleinberg, Joe Murray, Elizabeth Schuett and Tom Teepen.

  • Page Express: Paginated pages for sale and a direct link to The New York Times Syndicate, where CoxNet sells paginated pages to non-Cox papers.

  • Washington: Daily top stories from the bureau's staff.

  • CoxNet: The story of how Cox leverages its Wide Area Network to share the best news, ad and marketing materials among the Cox papers.

  • Campaign 2000: Keep up with the race to the White House with a daily spotlight, editorial cartoons and commentary.

  • Employment opportunities: Openings in newsrooms across the chain.

  • Best of Cox: A report on the 2000 Best of Cox competition, celebrating the chain's best writing, reporting, photography, graphics and design. The page is maintained in Atlanta by the CoxNet staff.


  • FUTURE IMAGE INC.
    The San Mateo, Calif.-based research and analysis firm specializing in digital imaging, has announced the report, "Protecting Visual Assets on the Internet: Turning Pictures into Profits."

    The report examines solutions offered by more than 100 suppliers, provides background material on copyright, the security infrastructure, and copy protection initiatives in other areas of intellectual property, and focuses in detail on the most viable options including their implementation by leading customers.

    The Vancouver, B.C., Canada company has announced the release of the PDF Seps2Comp plug-in for Adobe Acrobat. The plug-in merges separated files into composite documents and preserves trapping settings made in Quark XPress.

    PDF Seps2Comp enables users to merge separated PDF files back into fully editable composite documents. The composite document can be manipulated and saved in the same manner as any other PDF file.

    The cross-platform plug-in is available through various industry retailers and international distributors as well as on-line for $349

  • KNIGHTRIDDER.COM
    The new media arm of Knight Ridder of San Jose, has made a series of announcements regarding growth and strategy

    First, the company announced that its first multimedia marketing drive to promote its Real Cities network of city web sites will focus on Minneapolis-St. Paul and Lexington, Ky.

    Being promoted are two regional hubs, TwinCities.com at http://www.twincities.com/ and Kentucky.com at http://www.kentucky.com/., are affiliated with two Knight Ridder newspapers, the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS in Minnesota and the LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER in Lexington, Ky.

    Second, KnightRidder.com and the E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati plan to affiliate the local Web sites in four of Scripps' largest markets with the Real Cities national Web network.

    The Scripps sites joining the network include Colorado's DENVER ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS' rockymountainnews.com; Tennessee's MEMPHIS COMMERCIAL APPEAL's gomemphis.com; Tennessee's KNOXVILLE NEWS SENTINEL'S knoxnews.com, and cincinow.com, operated by WCPO-TV in Cincinnati and featuring a wide array of content from several radio stations, the CINCINNATI POST and other partners.

    Third, KnightRidder.com and Pennsylvania's PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE have said that the Pittsburgh regional portal site, www.pittsburghfirst.com, currently in development, will join the Real Cities national Web network. Fourth, KnightRidder.com and New Times Inc., a publisher of a group of alternative city weekly publications, said they have developed a strategic marketing partnership that will feature entertainment and news content from New Times on key regional hubs in the Real Cities local Web network. Initially, New Times local entertainment content will be promoted and integrated into Real Cities' destination sites serving six major U.S. markets, including San Francisco, Miami, Cleveland/Akron, Ohio, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Kansas City, Mo. and St. Louis.

    Select entertainment articles from New Times city publications, as well as its weekly cover stories will be highlighted and promoted each week on Real Cities' hubs. As part of the partnership, the New Times publications will also promote content and services from the Real Cities network.

    Fifth, KnightRidder.com and Yahoo! Inc. have agreed KnightRidder.com will provide local and regional news headlines from its Real Cities network to Yahoo! News, as well as additional headlines to the popular Full Coverage area of Yahoo! News. Sixth, KnightRidder.com announced a variety of new real estate services on its Real Cities real estate channel. Some of the real estate services are provided by HomeGain, a Web site for home sellers, and by ImproveNet, a leader in the national marketplace for home improvement products and services.

  • POWERADZ.COM
    The Internet infrastructure provider and aggregator of local content has announced an agreement with CareerSite Corp., an e-recruitment solution provider, to provide an on-line employment service through PowerAdz' Zwire Network. The new service, called CareerGold, will allow PowerAdz' affiliates to launch a comprehensive, on-line recruitment engine that attracts and connects job seekers and employers in their region, and across the country.

    CareerGold will be powered by CareerSite and use the CareerSite Recruiter software. The new service allows newspapers to offer local businesses a variety of on-line recruitment tools designed to ease the task of identifying, screening and selecting new employees.

    CareerGold will be included as a standard revenue channel for all Zwire Network affiliates.

    The company also said that Swift Newspapers Inc. of Carson City, Nev., has joined the PowerAdz "dot-com newspaper network." Swift newspapers reach more than 200,000 readers through 24 daily and weekly newspapers in California, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon and Nebraska.
