  • BINOMIAL INTERNATIONAL INC.
    The company has announced a new program called Phoenix 2000 for Disaster Recovery Planning, which helps businesses to quickly develop and maintain recovery and continuity plans.

    Binomial said Phoenix 2000 is designed to make the process of developing recovery plans as easy and as quick as possible. The system contains all of the text needed such plans and the user has only to select topics from an on-screen menu. In addition, there are a series of databases supplied to maintain the information that is needed for any company to recovery from a disaster. These include such information as inventories of staff, clients, accounts receivable and payable, critical services and contact information for responders, such as fire, police, medical services and contractors.

    System requirements include Windows 95,98, NT, 2000; 32 megabytes of random access memory; Pentium or better central processing unit, and CD (for installation only, unless downloaded from the Internet).

  • DESKNET INC.
    The supplier of automated publishing software has introduced an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) plug-in to help companies leverage content and creates "media-neutral" workflow environments for publishing to print and the Web.

    The new XML plug-in enables DeskNetAPS to take advantage of XML's rich indexing capabilities to tag content. For users who are writing in traditional applications such as MSWord or QuarkCopyDesk, or laying out pages in QuarkXPress, DeskNetAPS automatically extracts text and images and reformats them for the Web. The company said that converting content into a media-neutral format like XML allows content to be reused for Web sites, CD-ROMs, searchable databases and other purposes.

  • FILEMAKER INC.
    The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company has announced FileMaker XML Central, which provides documentation that details the Extensible Markup Language (XML) support in FileMaker Pro. It also includes instructional examples and useful links for learning more about XML and XML formatting technologies.

    The XML documentation and examples will also be included in the forthcoming FileMaker Developer 5, planned for shipment in April.

    The addition of XML technology enables dynamic data exchange between FileMaker Pro 5 databases and other systems, like Oracle and SAP.

    FileMaker Developer 5 will have a suggested retail price of $499 (US).

  • HARLEQUIN LTD.
    The Cambridge, England-based company and Electronics For Imaging Inc. of San Mateo, Calif. have jointly announced that all disputes and lawsuits between the two have been settled and resolved.

    In a joint statement, the companies said that the agreement reached was beneficial to both organizations, and served the needs of the individual companies, their customers and stockholders.

    The business-to-business Internet market maker for printed business materials has announced that it plans to acquire Creativepro.com Inc., a vertical portal and supplier of e-services and software tools for creative professionals; the company was formerly known as Extensis.

    The Bellevue, Wash.-based company said that it will now offer Web-enabled automation of the entire graphic arts workflow, from concept to production.

    ImageX.com said that it would pay a total of $97.1 million, consisting of approximately 4.3 million shares of ImageX.com common stock and $9.9 million in cash for Creativepro.com, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary and will continue to operate from its Portland, Ore. headquarters.

    The long-time provider of publishing automation software has said that it has redesigned its NPS 2000 publishing system.

    The company said that NPS 2000's new design takes advantage of the trend toward more flexibility and higher-speed performance with its incorporation of Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and its integration of Microsoft SQL Server.

    North Atlantic said that end users will see high-speed performance for all NPS functions, including file check-out/check-in, database queries, and browser-based previews. The improvement will have the greatest impact on users at high traffic sites, especially at heavy usage times. The flexibility of NPS 2000's architecture also streamlines the installation process, easing the burden on system integrators performing on-site installations and even making customer self-installations possible.

  • PUBLISHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS INC.
    The Barrington, Ill.-based supplier of newspaper business software has said that it has entered into a contract with the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR for the newspaper to license its Java-based circulation management, list matching and InSight products to assist with the newspaper's "delivery repositioning."

    The contract is the result of a two-year project by the 72,000-circulation MONITOR, which is based in Boston, to convert a majority of its subscribers to morning home delivery.

    The developer and integrator of Raster Image Processors (RIP) has announced that it will take on sales, support and development of the AutoPrep RIP (GerberRIPs), a product previously available from Barco Graphics.

    Effective April 1, Barco will turn over its Harlequin ScriptWorks-based RIP business to Xitron and Xitron will supply RIPs for the Barco CRESCENT Platesetters and IMPPRESS Proofers. The agreement includes new sales and customers currently under contract with Barco.
