Two Colorado newspapers, the DENVER ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS and the Daily Camera of Boulder have announced the launch of free dial-up Internet access services through agreements with 1stUp.com The ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS (359k) and the DAILY CAMERA (33k) are owned by E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati. The newspapers' readers will be able to download the free Internet program from each paper's website: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/ and http://www.thedailycamera.com/. The free access service is available to a large portion of the U.S. and Canada and consumers receive free, unlimited access to the web simply by keeping a movable navigation bar on their screens during the on-line session. This navigation bar presents users with small advertisements as well as convenient links to other web sites. 1stUp.com, a majority-owned operating company of CMGI Inc., is based in San Francisco and has a Web site at http://www.1stup.com/. Agfa Graphic Systems, Customer Technical Support (CTS) has announced the signing of an agreement with Screen USA of Rolling Meadows, Ill. This agreement establishes Agfa as the exclusive service provider for Screen FlatRite 1050 plate recorders. Screen USA is a leading supplier of computer-to-plate imaging systems. Agfa will provide system installation, training, and warranty support, as well as system maintenance agreements. The Cambridge, Mass., developer of type software has said that BitFlash Inc. of Gloucester, Ontario, has licensed and enhanced Bitstream JET to develop a Java engine that renders high-quality 2D graphics and text with significantly improved speed. The BitFlash engine, which will be available this quarter, takes advantage of Bitstream JET, a font engine written entirely in Java that provides a complete font scaling and rasterizing solution for Java applets, applications, Internet appliances and embedded systems. By increasing the performance of JET, BitFlash can deliver a compact, fast and complete Java rendering solution. Bitstream also said that the entire Bitstream Typeface Library is now available cross-platform. For the first time, the Bitstream library of more than 1200 fonts is available in PostScript Type 1 and TrueType formats, making it available for Macintosh and Windows. In addition, the company said every typeface design also includes the Euro currency symbol, designed to match each typeface. The supplier of systems to printers and publishers has said it has released Service Pack 1 for TWiST 4.0 workflow and LiTHO 4.0 page composition and retouching software systems. TWiST is the Kehl, Germany-based company's automated workflow software, available on both SGI and Sun platforms. TWiST is used to create custom pre-press and publishing workflows to automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks such as pre-flighting and converting files, trapping, proofing and building forms in either gravure or offset environments. LiTHO is a high-end interactive software package that combines digital illustration, retouching and page composition as well as autotrapping. DALiM is on the Web at http://www.dalim.com/ The Melbourne, Fla. supplier of newspaper advertising systems has said that the HERALD-SUN of Durham, N.C. has placed an order for an additional 20 licenses for booking retail and classified display ads with AdBase. The HERALD-SUN (51k) has been live with Mactive's AdBase system for classified advertising since November. The revenue generated from the sale of national advertisements is split, 50/50, with affiliates for driving traffic to the network. The World Association of Newspapers and IFRA, the global newspaper technology association, have launched a new executive development program for fast-track newspaper managers who will lead the industry in the 21st century. The two organizations, in association with the Scandinavian International Management Institute (SIMI), have begun receiving applications for the June to October 2000 class. Participants must have a minimum of three years management experience with an expectation by senior management that they can reach management board level and play a leadership role in the industry. Participation is limited to 30 executives. Two of the three segments will take place at the SIMI campus in Copenhagen. The third segment will be held at the Lillienberg Entrepreneurial Forum on Lake Constance in Switzerland.
