  • THE COLE PAPERS
The January number of the monthly newsletter of technology, journalism and publishing takes a hard look at why there was no chaos in the Year 2000 computer rollover.

Editor & Publisher David M. Cole speaks with a number of newspaper industry executives to determine what went right in the preparations for Y2K and he also monitored an international early warning system. Cole picks out the few bugs that were found and reports on the New Year's Eve dinner menu served in the newsroom of THE STAR-LEDGER in Newark, N.J.

Also in the January COLE PAPERS, Julius Duscha ponders why flexographic reproduction -- thought 20 years ago to be newspapers' savior from offset lithography -- hasn't taken off the way it was supposed to. Correspondent Steven E. Brier checks out the latest trends in digital cameras, while Correspondent Jay Small goes back to college to see what they're teaching about new media in journalism schools today.
